Thèmes de la recherche :
Alternative Cultural Places – values – ambiences – emerging countries – innovative methodologies.
Le projet de recherche :
In a global context marked by multiple crises (climatic, health, social, identity, terrorism, etc.), alternative cultural places (ACP’s) are playing a key role thanks to more sober and cooperative ways of acting in hyper- proximity, by generating original and sustainable solutions driven by the commitment of artists and practitioners. However, the practices developed and the values produced remain anchored today as tacit knowledge that needs to be documented and transferred. From our previous exploratory study, we have concluded that the values of ACP’s cannot be assessed solely through the quantitative (and economic) prism. The values of ACPs manifest themselves on a social, environmental, political, urban, architectural, aesthetic and ecological scale. Understanding the different types of value creation provided by these spaces, as well as the challenges they face (management processes, political support) is of vital interest to this research. Moreover, during our first phase of research we noticed the predominant role of the geographical context, and therefore the political, economic and social context, which leads us to take into consideration and document experiences outside Europe and specifically in emerging countries, which will provide us an insight into atypical contexts for the development and anchorage of these places, and their values within their urban environment marked by other crises (war, climate change, conflicts, inequalities, discrimination, etc.) and issues (government action plan, cultural and associative support and consideration, etc.).
The overall aim of this project is to qualitatively assess the values produced by alternative cultural places in different geographical and political contexts. From a methodological point of view, by invoking the concept of ambiences the aim is to develop and test innovative methodologies for capturing and studying the atmospheres produced, which informs us about the qualities of a space and its uses, and the impact these have on quality of life and well-being for artistic workers and more widely audiences and inhabitants. Also, the idea is to combine results produced by two projects (Alter-Places / funded by Europe Creative program ; and Values of places) to produce new knowledge about the role of ACPs in the construction of sustainable cities and new knowledge on the value produced (aesthetic). From an institutional point of view, the aim is to strengthen international collaboration between the ICCA laboratory and players and institutions in emerging countries. Thus, our final aim is to position the labEx ICCA as a leading lab in the topic of ACPs worldwide.
