L’ International Research Network (IRN) South-Stream organise son colloque de mi-programme intitulé “Streaming Platforms from the Global South – Trajectories and Transnational Expansions” du 27 au 29 octobre 2025 au Wits Club (Université de Witwatersrand), avec le soutien de l’IFAS-Recherche.
L’IRN South-Stream (2023-2027) est un programme de cinq ans financé par le CNRS et le LabEx ICCA qui vise à mener une réflexion collective et critique sur les plateformes culturelles et les acteurs du numériques en Afrique, en Asie et en Amérique du Sud. Coordonné par Christine Ithurbide (CNRS, Passages UMR 5319), le réseau comprend neuf partenaires institutionnels en Afrique du Sud, Nigeria, Inde, Turquie, Brésil, Chili, France et Royaume-Uni, ainsi qu’une cinquantaine de membres.
Cet événement de trois jours rassemble les coordinateurs et les membres des équipes du réseau de l’IRN afin de présenter et de discuter leurs recherches sur les thèmes suivants :
* La trajectoire de plateformes musicales et audiovisuelles d’Asie, d’Afrique et d’Amérique du Sud et leur expansion internationale.
* Les flux culturels et technologiques dans et entre les régions des Suds et les reconfigurations locales
* Les politiques numériques, l’IA et les plateformes culturelles
Quatre sessions thématiques permettront des réflexions croisées et interdisciplinaires sur une diversité de plateformes ainsi que sur les reconfigurations et les rapports de force auxquels elles sont associées dans les Suds. Parmi nos invités, nous avons le plaisir d’accueillir le professeur Iginio Gagliardone, Department of Media Studies, Wits University, pour une présentation intitulée « From Streaming to Sovereignty: Rethinking Digital Flows from the Global South » ainsi qu’une table-ronde sur l’AI MIND Institute de Wits University en dialogue avec Olu Randle, Head of Digital Arts Department à Wits University. Nous accueillerons également Daniel Motaung, fondateur du Safe Content Advocacy Network, et Tian Chen, docteur à l’université du Cap et cofondateur de Wubuntu, pour partager leur expérience et discuter des thèmes de l’IRN dans le cadre de plusieurs tables rondes.

The International Research Network (IRN) South-Stream is organizing its Mid-term Meeting “Streaming Platforms from the Global South – Trajectories and Transnational Expansions” from 27 to 29 October 2025 at the Wits Club, University of Witwatersrand.
The IRN South-Stream (2023-2027) is a five-year programme, funded by the CNRS and the LabEx ICCA, that aims to lead a collective and critical reflection on cultural platforms and digital players in Africa, Asia and South America. Coordinated by Christine Ithurbide (CNRS, Passages UMR 5319), the network comprises 9 institutional partners from South Africa, Nigeria, India, Turkey, Brazil, Chile, France and the UK and around 50 members.
This 3-day event brings together the IRN network’s head coordinators and team members to present and discuss their current research on the following key themes:
* The trajectory of homegrown music and audiovisual streaming platforms in Asia, Africa and South America and their international expansion.
* Cultural and technological flows in and between Global South regions and local reconfigurations
* Digital policy, AI and cultural platforms
Four thematic sessions will enable crossfieldwork reflection and dialogue on a diversity of streaming platforms as well as on the reconfigurations and power relations they are part of in the Global South. Among our special guests, we are delighted to invite Prof. Iginio Gagliardone, Department of Media Studies at Wits University, for a lecture and discussion titled “From Streaming to Sovereignty: Rethinking Digital Flows from the Global South” and a roundtable about the AI MIND Institute of Wits in dialogue with Olu Randle, Head of Digital Arts Department, Wits University. We will be also inviting Daniel Motaung, Founder of Safe Content Advocacy Network and Tian Chen, Dr University of CapeTown and co-founder of Wunbuntu to share their experience and discuss the IRN’s themes as part of several panels.
